Two blankets, three wraps & a dream: my baby photography origin story!

Before I was a mom, I was already that person — the one who would melt at the sight of a sleepy newborn, stare at baby toes like they were art, and mentally swaddle every infant I saw in a café. I was completely obsessed with babies. At the time, baby photography wasn’t even a thing in Karachi. Maternity shoots and wedding coverage? Sure. But beautifully styled newborn portraits with wraps, props, and posing? Almost unheard of. It wasn’t just new — it was a bit bold. In our culture, many families traditionally wait 40 days before taking the baby out of the house, so the idea of inviting a photographer or coming to the studio during such a sacred, delicate window of time after birth felt unfamiliar — even a little uncomfortable for some.
But I believed in capturing these fleeting, magical moments — so I took a deep breath, dove in headfirst, and became the first baby photographer in Karachi to bring this kind of experience to new parents.
The Early Days: Baskets, Beanbags & Hustle
When I first started out with baby photography in Karachi, I wasn’t in a fancy studio or behind designer backdrops. I had two baskets, three wraps, a posing beanbag, and a dream. I would pack everything up — like a one-woman circus — and lug it into people’s homes to do their newborn shoots. Looking back, I probably looked like a sleep-deprived Santa with a thing for neutral tones. But I loved every chaotic second of it. Those tiny yawns, those sleepy stretches — I knew I was capturing something priceless.

A Name, A Room, A Dream
Fun fact: my mom helped me name my business. (Thanks, Mama!) When I was unsure what to call this little dream of mine, she gave me the clarity I needed. With her support, and also my dad’s, lets not forget him— and a lot of trial and error — I turned a tiny room in her house into my very first home studio.
It was small, but it was filled with heart (and way too many props for one room). That space was where So Baby – Photography by Sobia truly began to take shape.
Where We Are Now 💫
Today, what started as a one-woman show with two baskets is now a full-fledged, cozy, love-filled newborn photography studio in Karachi — designed with babies (and tired parents) in mind. It’s a space where magic happens daily. And the best part? It’s now trusted and loved by families across Karachi.
Whether I’m capturing a newborn yawn, a six-month-old’s belly laugh, or a first birthday smash, I still feel the same butterflies I did when I first started.
Because this isn’t just about photography — it’s about freezing time, honoring memories, and celebrating new life.
